Sunday Roast: Not just for the brits
A couple weeks ago, I was watching one of my many YouTube channel subscriptions. Several of my favorites happen to be based in the UK, and two in particular are big proponents of Sunday Roast. For any British readers, y0u no-doubt already know what Sunday Roast is, but for anyone who is unfamiliar:
A Sunday roast is a traditional British meal that is typically served on Sunday, consisting of roasted meat, roast potatoes and accompaniments such as Yorkshire pudding, stuffing, gravy, and condiments such as apple sauce, mint sauce, or redcurrant jelly. A wide range of vegetables can be served as part of a roast dinner, such as broccoli, brussels sprouts, carrots, cauliflower, parsnips, or peas, which can be boiled, steamed, or roasted alongside the meat and potatoes.
The Sunday roast's prominence in British culture is such that in a UK poll in 2012 it was ranked second in a list of things people love about Britain. Other names for this meal include Sunday lunch, Sunday dinner, roast dinner, and full roast. The meal is often comparable to a less grand version of a traditional Christmas dinner. Andrew and I love cooking, and who says Brits get to have all the fun? :) We can always use a little more joy (and good food) in our lives, so we’ve decided to adopt the Sunday Roast tradition as our own! This past Sunday was the inaugural Sunday Roast. Our first menu included: rosemary roasted chicken with carrots, potatoes, and celery, pear tart for dessert, and a bottle of champagne shared with friends. Already can’t wait for next weekend’s. Do you have any favorite Sunday Roast recipes? Or any cooking traditions? Would love to hear in the comments!
