How to sew a quilt

Growing up, I was lucky enough to have a very close relationship with my grandparents. my sister and I spent a lot of time with them in my childhood—usually doing crafts. My Mamaw was an absolutely prolific quilter and shared her passion for sewing and quilting with me from an early age, and I really got started with sewing around age 7 or 8 by learning how to make quilts.

Sewing can be really intimidating at the start. Like with any new thing, it feels like there is just so much to learn! A patchwork quilt is such a great beginner project because it builds your skills, comfort, and familiarity with your machine and the general sewing process: You’ll get familiar with the process of washing and cutting fabric, sew lots of short-length, straight sewing mixed with bursts of long-length sewing, and you even get a bit of practice with hand-sewing with the binding. Basically, it’s the perfect I’ve-never-opened-my-sewing-machine-box-what-do-I-do project and I decided I wanted to make a tutorial to help others learn how.

In my Quilt-Along (QAL), I show you the step-by-step process to make your first quilt in a 10-part video tutorial series. It’s my gift to the community to thank you so much for following along on my making adventures.

Happy Sewing!
